Urban Food Network

What is the Urban Food Network?

The Urban Food Network (UFN) was founded
to educate, inspire and provide families who live
in food deserts access to fresh fruits and vegetables. By providing people in the community access to fresh fruits, vegetables and nutritional education, it can assist in the fight against obesity and other chronic diseases which can lead to a healthier communities.

MISSION
The Urban Food Network was founded to educate, inspire and provide children and families living in disadvantage communities classified as food deserts with access to fruits and vegetables by creating an urban community garden and supporting educational programs.

THE NEED
The issue and concern is that many of the students who attend my school, Kipp Atlanta Collegiate High School, live in food deserts and I wanted to provide a way for their families and the people who live in the community next to our school to have access to fresh fruits and vegetables instead of canned products, which are not healthy.

An incredible swath of Atlanta meets the definition a food desert, according to a mapping tool of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The definition boils down to access to food – distance from food stores and access to transportation.
